Nawat
is the heritage language of the Pipils who live in the western part of El Salvador. The language is sometimes called Pipil in English.

Nawat resembles the modern dialects of Nahuatl spoken in parts of southern Mexico, but is generally considered a separate language.

Nobody is sure how many Nawat speakers are left, and many of them live isolated from each other in remote rural areas.

At the present time efforts are underway to keep the language alive and initiate a language recovery process.
